There are different methods to end a marriage. One way is an amicable divorce where both parties chose to end the marriage with no litigation. There are no attorneys involved and the parties basically divorce themselves. Neither party has legal representation.

The second way and what we most often see in the movies & media are litigated divorces where both parties lawyer up and the sides are chosen. It may seem the normal way of divorcing, but this is far from the healthiest way to end a relationship if there are children involved.

A third method that is now sweeping the country is collaborative process. This is where at the beginning of the divorce process the divorcing couple agrees there will be no litigation. Each party has an attorney who has been trained in the collaborative process and the attorneys also agree to this. This is a health solution for restructuring families. The collborative divorce process provides the benefits of attorney assistance while avoiding the negative atmosphere of litigation. This process can also include coaches which  might include communication specialists, mediators and/or mental health professionals. There is a financial part of the team as well which might include financial specialists, mortgage brokers or real estate agents to participate, as needed. This process can reduce destructive conflict and add a climate of cooperation and respect. This models good skills to the children of the divorcing family and thus reducing more tension in the household.

The Collaborative Divorce Process includes workable alternatives to litigated divorce.
